3. Working

Linear motion bearings work by allowing ball bearings to roll inside the bearing sleeve. These balls are constrained within a retainer that moves linearly with the shaft while maintaining precision and minimizing friction.

4. Principle

The principle is based on linear rolling motion using recirculating balls. The balls roll between the inner shaft and outer sleeve in a closed loop. This drastically reduces friction compared to sliding motion, enabling high-speed and precise movement.

5. Assembly

  1. Slide the bearing onto the linear shaft.
  2. Secure it using end blocks or pillow blocks.
  3. If using a flanged bearing, fix the flange with screws.
  4. Ensure alignment is straight to avoid misloading.
  5. For open-type LM bearings, ensure shaft is supported using guide rails.

6. Installation Process

  1. Clean the shaft and housing to remove debris.
  2. Align the shaft parallel to the mounting surface.
  3. Insert the bearing gently; do not hammer.
  4. Use retaining rings or blocks to secure the bearing.
  5. Lubricate before operation.
  6. Perform test runs to ensure smooth movement.

10. FAQs

Q1: What’s the difference between open and closed type LM bearings?
A: Open-type bearings allow mounting over support rails; closed-type fully wrap around the shaft.

Q2: Are these bearings suitable for vertical loads?
A: No, they are ideal for horizontal or angled setups with radial loads.

Q3: Can I use stainless steel versions for corrosive environments?
A: Yes, stainless steel variants are available for such applications.

Q4: Do I need to lubricate them after purchase?
A: No. LOCUS bearings are pre-lubricated, but periodic re-lubrication improves lifespan.

Q5: Can I use standard shafts?
A: Precision-ground shafts are recommended for smooth motion and longer life.
